Social Emotional
Conscious Discipline EBook

Conscious Discipline is one of our familiar resources that we have used inside our daily classroom to help support our social and emotional growth. I have provided a link to a story that includes some of our familiar characters such as Shubert to help you understand why we are are not able to see each other in our normal classroom daily. I really liked this book for the familiarity of the characters and for the simple explanation of our current situations. I hope that you and your family can sit down and read through this story together to help answer any questions you might have about what is going on.

Children are naturally social learners and this book is written for children by those who understand child development and learning. This story gives the child an opportunity to experience developmentally appropriate materials and authentic learning on the topic of COVID-19. Conscious Discipline's book allows families to navigate the topic through student led discussions with a trusted caregiver to assure the discussion is culturally appropriate.Their caregiver can answer any questions they feel are individually appropriate and give their child a sense of security during this unprecedented time. This book can provide a developmentally appropriate foundation for parents and children for a discussion on the topic of COVID-19 for our young children.

Wonder Farm
First 8 studios has developed and offered a free virtual farm game that aligns with early science learning skills for young children in Preschool through Kindergarten. Within this game, children are given a unique learning experience in which they are able to plant their own seeds for different vegetables, take care of their plants and watch them grow all from the comfort of their own home.

Authentic Learning: This game offers an authentic learning experience by allowing children to explore real world scenarios such as cause and effect, how climate effects plant growth and the roll that animals and bugs play in our agriculture world.

Developmentally Appropriate Practice: Wonder farm provides young children with interesting, engaging, real world interactions via a virtual environment. This specific activity allows our young children to direct and guide their own learning through cause and effect scenarios. Your child will choose from a variety of culturally appropriate vegetables that they want to grow and decide how they will care for and harvest their farm. Building upon this concept, once the child has completed their farm, they are able to combine their products into a a virtual salad, which will help promote and encourage healthy eating habits.

Science, Knowledge & Skills B1: Makes meaning from explorations and generates ideas and solutions based on their own observations of natural and human made worlds.

Science, Knowledge & Skills A3: Asks questions and begins to solve problems that arise during explorations.

Sesame Street Art Maker
Sesame Street has a wonder art maker page within their website. On this page you will find a ton of different interactive coloring activities that allows your child to express their creative side! There are options ranging from food, holidays, outdoor sidewalk coloring and even a night sky creator. My favorite is the pizza maker activity. During this activity, Elmo's voice is in the background encouraging your child to try different things and validating the hardworking that your child has done.

Authentic Learning: The pizza maker activity allows your child to experience a real world activity and make a pizza themselves that mimics what they may have for dinner from time to time. They have the freedom to use their imagination and create whatever pizza they want. Elmo also challenges your child to make different emotions on the pizza such as a smiley face.

Developmentally Appropriate Practice: Sesame Street's wonder art tab provides an age appropriate selection of options for your children to develop a culturally appropriate, virtual artistic masterpiece. Sesame street is great at recognizing different cultures and types of families and this is reflected within their art activities. Throughout this learning experience, you and your child are able to confidently create art together that allows your child to be recognized as an individual and encouraged to continue their creation!
